Embracing Kindness: Why Being Nice Isn't Enough Anymore

MOVE OVER, NICE PEOPLE — IT’S TIME TO BE KIND

As we bid farewell to August and prepare for a new season, it’s time to shift our perspective: let’s move beyond being nice and step into the realm of kindness.

So, what’s the difference? Most of us think the two are interchangeable, but they’re not. Being nice generally means you’re polite, agreeable, and pleasant to be around — you might even smile often. But kindness? That takes something deeper. Kindness requires strength.

When you practice kindness, you embody empathy, compassion, patience, gentleness, forgiveness, and genuine care for others. In other words, you reflect God’s own character by extending His love. Kindness isn’t optional — it’s a command and a natural outcome of a Spirit-led life.

It doesn’t take strength to be nice, polite, or smile.

Even the most unkind person can say “please” or “thank you.” What I’ve learned about nice people is that they often avoid necessary conversations, fail to set boundaries, and choose comfort over courage. Don’t get me wrong — it’s good to be nice. But it’s not enough.

Kindness, on the other hand, is about doing what’s right, even when it’s hard. It’s possible to be kind without being “nice.” Kindness is rooted in truth, empathy, and concern for others. A kind person may give honest feedback, set firm boundaries, or lovingly speak hard truths. Niceness avoids conflict. Kindness chooses courage.

Kindness is often uncomfortable, but it’s always rooted in love. Sometimes it looks like tough love: setting limits to protect others, gently pointing out hurtful behavior, or guiding someone back on track. Unlike niceness, kindness requires strength.

  • It takes strength to build meaningful relationships.

  • It takes strength to forgive.

  • It takes strength to hold people accountable.

  • It takes strength to withhold judgment.

  • It takes strength to speak the truth in love.

  • It takes strength to correct with love.

And this strength doesn’t come from “Wheaties” — it comes from Christ. Through faith and the fruit of the Holy Spirit, we’re equipped to live with real kindness.

The world doesn’t need more nice people. It needs kind people. People who lead with compassion, honesty, courage, and love.

So come on, nice people — move over to kindness. Because you can be too nice, but it’s impossible to be too kind.

Ephesians 4:32 “Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another as God in Christ forgave you.”

Love,
